CFER Calls Upon All Supporters of True Equality to Join Our Growing “No On Prop. 16” Campaign Coalition

For Immediate Release

July 17, 2020

San Diego, California: For a collective goal of defending the equal treatment clause of the California Constitution, Californians for Equal Rights (CFER) now represents an organized opposition against Proposition 16 that is officially recognized by the State as the principal ballot measure committee. In the spirit of unity and collaboration, CFER calls upon concerned policy makers, civil society organizations and private citizens to join our coalition to fight against government preferences in public jobs, public schools and government contracts.

Since early March, CFER founders have mobilized a broad-based and diverse coalition of civil rights champions, prominent scholars and various grassroots groups. Led by Mr. Ward Connerly, our esteemed executive team gathers tremendous talents in legal, political, and community-organizing realms. In early July, we were entrusted by two minority leaders in the California Legislature to submit official ballot arguments to the Secretary of State. With legislative authorization, CFER has assembled six ballot arguments signors who come from diverse political, professional and racial backgrounds. CFER’s original argument against Proposition 16, rebuttal argument and ballot summary have been selected to be featured on the upcoming Voter Information Guide.

In light of growing public awareness, CFER is delighted to see more groups and citizens rising up to oppose Proposition 16. Especially, we sincerely applaud former Senator Bob Huff and Mrs. Huff for speaking up in support of our cause at a July 16th press conference. In 2014, Mr. Bob Huff, along with several founding members of CFER, played an instrumental role in halting SCA-5 (Proposition 16’s precedent) at the level of state assembly.

CFER wholeheartedly welcomes all supporters of true equal rights to join us to mount an effective and well-coordinated battle against the established interested behind Proposition 16. With an unified opposition, we can successfully coordinate all resources and talents for the single purpose of defeating Proposition 16. Together we win!

About CFER: “Californians for Equal Rights, No on 16” (CFER) is the principal ballot measure committee, with a mission to defend Proposition 209 and the principle of equal rights as enshrined in the California Constitution (Section 31 of Article I). Passed in November 1996 by popular vote (54.55%), Prop. 209 prohibits the state from “discriminating against, or granting preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin”. Prop. 209 upholds America’s fundamental principles of equal opportunity, merit and individual liberty, with a simple language identical to Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. CFER accomplishes this mission through public education and grassroots campaigns to push back legislative attempts that would reinstitute racial and gender preferences in government programs.
